Formula DRIFT held their first charity blackjack event on July 30th, 2009 during the Round Four: All In Event at the Aliante Casino and Hotel, the official hotel of Formula DRIFT Round 4: All In and was part of the different promotional events surrounding the weekend event. Wings for Life charity received all proceeds from the blackjack event. Formula DRIFT drivers, Sponsors, Team Members, Media Members and Staff members were asked to make monetary donations for entry.
A total of thirty-six players participated in the event including Formula Drifts driver Vaughn Gittin Jr., Tanner Foust, Chris Forsberg and Ross Petty. Formula DRIFT Judges Tony Angelo and Andy Yen also participated in the charity blackjack tournament together with Miss Formula DRIFT, Miki Taka. Brian Skagen, the vice president and general manager of Aliante Station said that they are very proud to partner with the Formula DRIFT Series this year.
This was a good opportunity to have all participants and events the fans of FORMULA Drift to make Aliante Station their main choice for their stay. He added that he look forward in hosting the series in the years to come. The Wings for Life Spinal Cord Research Foundation was started in 2004 by Dietrich Mateschitz, the Chief Executive Officer of Red Bull and Heinz Kinigadner, multiple motocross world champion and KTM Sports. The foundation's main goal is to support the research being conducted in the field of the central nervous system in search of a cure for paralysis.
Ryan Sage, the vice president of marketing and co-founder of Formula DRIFT said that the Formula DRIFT blackjack event turned out to be more than what they expected. He said that thirty-six players participated in the event and they were able to raise enough money for the Wings for Life Foundation. Sponsors donated different prizes that were given to the finalists including copies of Forza two video game, XBOX 360 game console, PUMA gift cards, Oakley sunglasses, Meister watch, Rogue Status apparel, a prize package from Attic and a two-night stay at the Aliante Station.
After three rounds of competition, the final table consisted of six participants. A staff member of Formula Drift, Steve Choi, walked away with the top spot and his pick from the prize pool and picked the XBOX 360 console and the Forza two game. Formula DRIFT points leader Chris Forsberg (NOS Energy/Maxxis Tire Nissan finished in 2nd place, who picked the PUMA gift cards and Rogue Status apparel.
John Pangilinan of ID Agency, Formula DRIFT's agency of record, finished in 3rd place and received a Meister watch and Forza two video game. Overall, it was a successful tournament for everyone involved including Aliante Station, Wings for Life Charity and Formula Drift. Formula DRIFT continues for Round Five: Breaking Point at Evergreen Speedway on August 7th, 2009-August 8th, 2009.
