On August 20th, 2008, some retired football great played blackjack to raise cash for some of their fellow football players who did not hit the National Football League jackpot. Paul Hornung, a Packers halfback from the Lombardi-era was among of the several former football stars enjoying blackjack in New Buffalo, Indiana, for a blackjack event hosted by the organization "Gridiron Greats".
The group raises money for other retired National Football League players who desperately need it for surgery or just to pay for their everyday expenses. Even with their past achievements-and the current riches offered by the football league-Hornung and other legends say that a lot of players that made the NFL on what it is today are being left out of the blessings.
Hornung said that he receives $900 a month. He added that players of today and fifteen years back, if they played for 11 years and receives an early retirement, they will just get $8,000. Hornung said that he wants to help his fellow players that were unable to prosper after they have played in the National Football League. Players were able to raise $20,000 for the cause.
